Amarnath – First Semester (Paragraph 4)

Leaving Islamabad, we caught up somewhere with the pilgrimage, and camped with it, for that night, at Pawan, a place famous for its holy springs. I can remember yet the brilliance of the lights reflected in the clear black waters of the tank that evening, and throngs of pilgrims proceeding in little groups from shrine to shrine.

ইসলামাবাদ ছেড়ে যাওয়ার পর যাত্রীদের সাথে আমাদের এক জায়গায় দেখা হয়, এবং তাদের সঙ্গে সেই রাতে পবন নামক জায়গায় আমরা তাঁবু ফেলেছিলাম, যে জায়গা পবিত্র ঝর্নার জন্য বিখ্যাত। এখনও আমার মনে পড়ে সন্ধ্যার সময় দিঘিটার স্বচ্ছ কালো জলে প্রতিফলিত আলোর দ্যুতি আর তীর্থযাত্রীদের দলগুলির এক মন্দির থেকে অন্য মন্দিরে এগিয়ে চলার দৃশ্য।

At Pahalgam-the village of the shepherds-the camp halted for a day, to keep Ekadashi. It was a beautiful little ravine floored, for the most part with sandy islands in the pebble-worn bed of a mountain stream. The slopes about it were dark with pine-trees, and over the mountain at its head was seen, at sunset, the moon, not yet full. It was the scenery of Switzerland or Norway, at their gentlest and loveliest. Here we saw the last of human dwellings, a bridge, a farm-house, with its ploughed fields, and a few saetter-huts. And here, on a grassy knoll, when the final march began, we left the rest of our party encamped.

পহলগাম — মেষপালকের গ্রাম—একাদশী পালন করার জন্য তাবুর যাত্রীগণ এখানেই একদিন বিশ্রাম করল। জায়গাটি একটি সুন্দর ছোটো গিরিখাত যার মধ্যে অবস্থিত ছিল একটি পাহাড়ি নদী, তার মধ্যে বয়ে যাওয়া নুড়ির সংঘর্ষে সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল ছোটো ছোটো বালুকাময় দ্বীপ। পাশের ঢালগুলি সারি সারি পাইন গাছের ছায়ায় অন্ধকার হয়ে গিয়েছিল, সূর্যাস্তের পর পর্বতের সর্বোচ্চ চূড়ায় চাঁদ দেখা গেল, তবে তা তখনও পূর্ণ ছিল না। এ যেন সুইটজারল্যান্ড কিংবা নরওয়ের সবচেয়ে শান্ত ও মনোরম দৃশ্য। এখানে আমরা শেষ জনবসতির চিহ্ন দেখলাম, একটি সেতু, একটি খামারবাড়ি, পাশের খেতে লাঙল চষা হয়েছে, আর কতকগুলি বিক্ষিপ্ত কুঁড়েঘর রয়েছে। শেষ পথটুক পার হওয়ার জন্য যাত্রা শুরু হতে দেখলাম, বাকি যাত্রীগণের তাঁবুগুলি তখন ঘাসে ঢাকা গোলাকার পাহাড়টির উপর খাটানো রয়েছে।

Through scenes of indescribable beauty, three thousand of us ascended the valleys that opened before us as we went. The first day we camped in a pine-wood; the next, we had passed the snow-line, and pitched our tents beside a frozen river. That night, the great camp-fire was made of juniper, and the next evening, at still greater heights, the servants had to wander many miles, in search of this scanty fuel. At last the regular pathway came to an end, and we had to scramble up and down, along goat-paths, on the face of steep declivities, till we reached the boulder-strewn gorge, in which the Cave of  Amarnath was situated. As we ascended this, we had before us the snow-peaks covered with a white veil, newly-fallen; and in the Cave itself, in a niche never reached by sunlight, shone the great ice-Lingam, that must have seemed, to the awestruck peasants who first came upon it, like the waiting Presence of God.

অনিবচনীয় সৌন্দর্যময় দৃশ্যের মধ্য দিয়ে আমরা তিন হাজার যাত্রী আমাদের সামনের উন্মুক্ত উপত্যকায় উঠতে লাগলাম। প্রথম দিন আমাদের তাঁবু পড়ল পাইন বনে; পরের দিন আমরা তুষার রেখা পেরিয়ে একটি বরফ-ঢাকা নদীর ধারে আমাদের তাঁবু খাটালাম। সে রাতে জুনিপার কাঠ দিয়ে ছাউনির বিশাল আগুন জ্বালানো হল; আর পরের দিন সন্ধ্যায়, আরও বেশি উচ্চতায়, এই স্বল্প জ্বালানির সন্ধানে চাকরদের বহু মাইল ঘুরে বেড়াতে হয়েছিল। অবশেষে বাঁধা ধরা পথ শেষ হল এবং আমরা উঁচু-নীচু সরু পথ দিয়ে ছাগলের মতো পাকদণ্ডি খাওয়া রাস্তা বরাবর এগোলাম এবং খাড়া উতরাই-এর মুখে প্রকাণ্ড প্রকাণ্ড পাথর বিছানো যে গিরিখাতে  অমরনাথ অবস্থিত সেখানে পৌঁছালাম। আমরা যখন আরোহণ করছিলাম সামনে তুষার ঢাকা শিখরগুলি সদ্য ঝরে পড়া তুষারের সাদা ঘোমটায় ঢেকে গেছিল; এবং গুহার ভেতরে যেখানে সূর্যালোক প্রবেশ করতে পারে না, এমন এক গভীর জায়গায় মহান তুষারলিঙ্গ বিরাজমান। যেসব কৃষক এই তুষারলিঙ্গের প্রথম দর্শনে ভারী অবাক হয়ে গিয়েছিল, তাদের কাছে এটি সাক্ষাৎ ভগবানের আবির্ভাব বলেই মনে হয়ে থাকবে।
