Amarnath – First Semester (Paragraph 3)
There were hundreds of monks, of all the orders, with their Gerua tents, some no larger than good-sized umbrella, and amongst these, the Swami’s influence appeared to be magnetic. The more learned of them swarmed about him at every halting place, filling his tent, and remaining absorbed in conversation, throughout the hours of daylight. The talk on their side, he told us afterwards, had been all of Shiva, and they had remonstrated with him seriously, when he had insisted, occasionally, on drawing their attention to the world about them. Even foreigners, they urged, were men. Why make such distinctions between Swadesh and bidesh? Nor could many of them understand the warmth of his love and sympathy for Mohammedanism. This same other-worldliness that made Swadesh and bidesh indistinguishable, also prevented these simple souls from formally conceiving of a unity, in which Hindu and Mohammedan were but rival elements. The soil of the Punjab, they argued, was drenched with the blood of those who had died for the faith. Here, at least, let him practice a narrow orthodoxy ! In answer to this, as became one who was, in fact ‘an anachronism of the future,’ the Swami made those practical concessions of the moment that were expressive of his love for the brethren, and drove his principles home to their minds with the greater force and vehemence. But, as he told the talc of his warm discussions, the foreign mind could not help, with some amusement, noting the paradox that the Tehsildar himself, and many officers and servants of the pilgrimage, had been Mussulmans, and that no one had dreamt of objecting to their entering the Cave with the Hindu worshippers, on the ultimate arrival at the shrine. The Tehsildar came afterwards, indeed, with a group of friends, begging formal acceptance by the Swami as disciples; and in this, no one seemed to find anything incongruous or surprising.

সেখানে বিভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়ের শত শত সাধু ছিলেন, তাঁদের তাঁবুগুলির রঙ ছিল গেরুয়া, কতকগুলি আবার একটি বড়ো মাপের ছাতার মতোই, আর এসবের মধ্যে স্বামীজির অসীম প্রভাব লক্ষণীয় ছিল। তাঁদের মধ্যে যাঁরা অপেক্ষাকৃত বিদ্বান, তাঁরা প্রত্যেক বিশ্রামের জায়গায় স্বামীজিকে ঘিরে থাকতেন, তাঁর তাঁবুতে ভিড় করে, দিনের আলো থাকা পর্যন্ত কথাবার্তায় মগ্ন থাকতেন। তিনি পরে আমাদের বলেন, তাঁদের কথাবার্তার বিষয় ছিল শিব, আর মাঝে মাঝে তিনি যখন জোর করে তাঁদের মনোযোগ বাইরের জগতের প্রতি আকর্ষণ করতেন তাঁরা তাঁকে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানাতেন। তাঁরা জোর দিয়ে বলতেন, বিদেশিরাও মানুষ। তবে স্বদেশ ও বিদেশের মধ্যে পার্থক্য করা কেন? তাঁদের অনেকেই মুসলমান ধর্মের প্রতি তাঁর ভালোবাসা ও সহানুভূতির উন্নতা বুঝতেই পারতেন না। যে পরলোক ভাবনা স্বদেশ-বিদেশকে এক ও অভিন্ন বলে ভাবাত, সেই ভাবনাই এই সরল মনের মানুষদের হিন্দু ও মুসলমান যে এক অখণ্ড সত্তার দুটি পরস্পরবিরোধী অঙ্গ—এ কথা বুঝতে বাধা দিত । তাঁদের যুক্তি ছিল, যাঁরা ধর্মবিশ্বাসের জন্য প্রাণ দিয়েছিলেন, পাঞ্জাবের মাটি তাঁদের রক্তে ভেজা। অন্তত এখানে যেন তিনি ধর্মের গোঁড়ামিকে অভ্যাসবশত মেনে চলেন! এর উত্তরে স্বামীজি, আসলে যিনি ছিলেন ভাবীযুগের, অথচ কোনোক্রমে আগের যুগে এসে পড়েছিলেন, সেই সময়ের মতো কিছু আচরণে বিরত থাকতেন, যাতে ভ্রাতৃস্থানীয় সাধুদের প্রতি তাঁর ভালোবাসার পরিচয় পাওয়া গেল এবং তাঁর মূল নীতিগুলি আরও দৃঢ়তার সঙ্গে গভীরভাবে তাঁদের মনের মধ্যে গেঁথে গেল। কিন্তু, তিনি যখন এইসব উয় আলোচনার গল্প করছিলেন, বিদেশিরা আমোদ অনুভব না করে থাকতে পারলেন না যেহেতু তহশিলদার নিজে এবং এই তীর্থযাত্রার সঙ্গে যুক্ত অনেক অফিসার, এবং কর্মচারীরা মুসলমান ছিলেন, এবং তীর্থস্থানে এসে হিন্দু উপাসকদের সঙ্গে গুহায় প্রবেশে তাদের জন্য কোনো বাধা আসতে পারে একথা কেউ স্বপ্নেও ভাবতে পারেননি। বস্তুত, পরে তহশিলদার এবং তাঁর একদল বন্ধু স্বামীজির কাছে শিষ্যত্ব গ্রহণের জন্য আসেন, এবং এই ব্যাপারটা কারোর কাছে অদ্ভুত বা বিস্ময়কর বলে মনে হয়নি।
