The Ghost Brahman
Once on a time there lived a poor Brahman, who not being a Kulin, found it the hardest thing in the world to get married. একসময় একটি গরিব ব্রাহ্মণ ছিলেন, যিনি কুলীন না হওয়ায় বিয়ে করা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে কঠিন কাজ বলে মনে করতেন।
He went to rich people and begged of them to give him money that he might marry a wife. তিনি ধনী লোকদের কাছে গিয়ে ভিক্ষা করতেন যাতে তারা তাকে বিয়ে করার জন্য টাকা দেয়।
And a large sum of money was needed, not so much for the expenses of the wedding, as for giving to the parents of the bride. এবং একটি বড় অঙ্কের টাকা প্রয়োজন ছিল, বিয়ের খরচের জন্য নয়, বরং কনের বাবা-মাকে দেওয়ার জন্য।
He begged from door to door, flattered many rich folk, and at last succeeded in scraping together the sum needed. তিনি দরজায় দরজায় ভিক্ষা করলেন, অনেক ধনী লোকের প্রশংসা করলেন, এবং অবশেষে প্রয়োজনীয় টাকা জোগাড় করতে সক্ষম হলেন।
The wedding took place in due time; and he brought home his wife to his mother. যথাসময়ে বিয়ে সম্পন্ন হলো; এবং তিনি তার স্ত্রীকে মায়ের কাছে বাড়িতে নিয়ে এলেন।
After a short time he said to his mother—”Mother, I have no means to support you and my wife; I must therefore go to distant countries to get money somehow or other.” কিছুদিন পর তিনি তার মাকে বললেন— “মা, তোমাকে এবং আমার স্ত্রীকে সমর্থন করার কোনো উপায় আমার নেই; তাই আমাকে কোনোভাবে টাকা আনার জন্য দূর দেশে যেতে হবে।”
“I may be away for years, for I won’t return till I get a good sum. In the meantime I’ll give you what I have; you make the best of it, and take care of my wife.” “আমি হয়তো বহু বছর ধরে দূরে থাকব, কারণ ভালো পরিমাণ টাকা না পেলে আমি ফিরব না। এর মধ্যে আমি যা আছে তা তোমাকে দেব; তুমি সেটাকে যথাসম্ভব কাজে লাগাবে এবং আমার স্ত্রীর যত্ন নেবে।”
The Brahman receiving his mother’s blessing set out on his travels. ব্রাহ্মণ তার মায়ের আশীর্বাদ নিয়ে যাত্রা শুরু করলেন।
In the evening of that very day, a ghost assuming the exact appearance of the Brahman came into the house. সেই একই দিনের সন্ধ্যায়, ব্রাহ্মণের হুবহু চেহারার একটি ভূত বাড়িতে প্রবেশ করল।
The newly married woman, thinking it was her husband, said to him—”How is it that you have returned so soon? You said you might be away for years; why have you changed your mind?” নববিবাহিত নারী, তাকে তার স্বামী ভেবে বললেন— “তুমি এত তাড়াতাড়ি ফিরে এসেছ কেন? তুমি তো বলেছিলে তুমি হয়তো বহু বছর দূরে থাকবে; কেন হঠাৎ মন পরিবর্তন করলে?”
The ghost said—”To-day is not a lucky day, I have therefore returned home; besides, I have already got some money.” ভূত বলল— “আজকের দিনটি শুভ নয়, তাই আমি বাড়িতে ফিরে এসেছি; তাছাড়া, আমি ইতিমধ্যে কিছু টাকা পেয়ে গেছি।”
The mother did not doubt but that it was her son. মা একটুও সন্দেহ করেননি যে এটি তার ছেলে নয়।
So the ghost lived in the house as if he was its owner, and as if he was the son of the old woman and the husband of the young woman. তাই ভূত বাড়িতে এমনভাবে থাকতে লাগল যেন সে বাড়ির মালিক এবং বৃদ্ধার ছেলে ও যুবতীর স্বামী।
As the ghost and the Brahman were exactly like each other in everything, like two peas, the people in the neighbourhood all thought that the ghost was the real Brahman. যেহেতু ভূত এবং ব্রাহ্মণ একেবারে হুবহু একরকম ছিল, দুইটি মটরশুঁটির মতো, আশেপাশের লোকজন সবাই ভেবেছিল ভূতই আসল ব্রাহ্মণ।
After some years the Brahman returned from his travels; and what was his surprise when he found another like him in the house. কিছু বছর পরে ব্রাহ্মণ তার যাত্রা থেকে ফিরে এলেন; এবং বাড়িতে নিজের মতো আরেকজনকে দেখে তিনি বিস্মিত হলেন।
The ghost said to the Brahman—”Who are you? what business have you to come to my house?” ভূত ব্রাহ্মণকে বলল— “তুমি কে? তুমি আমার বাড়িতে আসার কী প্রয়োজন?”
“Who am I?” replied the Brahman, “let me ask who you are. This is my house; that is my mother, and this is my wife.” “আমি কে?” ব্রাহ্মণ উত্তর দিলেন, “তোমাকে বরং জিজ্ঞাসা করি তুমি কে। এটা আমার বাড়ি; ওখানে আমার মা, এবং এটা আমার স্ত্রী।”
The ghost said—”Why herein is a strange thing. Every one knows that this is my house, that is my wife, and yonder is my mother; and I have lived here for years.” ভূত বলল— “এটা তো অদ্ভুত ব্যাপার! সবাই জানে এটা আমার বাড়ি, ওটা আমার স্ত্রী, এবং ওখানে আমার মা; আমি বহু বছর ধরে এখানে বসবাস করছি।”
“And you pretend this is your house, and that woman is your wife. Your head must have got turned, Brahman.” “আর তুমি ভান করছো যে এটা তোমার বাড়ি, এবং ওই নারী তোমার স্ত্রী। নিশ্চয়ই তোমার মাথা ঘুরে গেছে, ব্রাহ্মণ।”
So saying the ghost drove away the Brahman from his house. এ কথা বলে ভূত ব্রাহ্মণকে তার বাড়ি থেকে তাড়িয়ে দিল।
The Brahman became mute with wonder. ব্রাহ্মণ বিস্ময়ে নির্বাক হয়ে গেলেন।
He did not know what to do. তিনি জানতেন না কী করবেন।
At last he bethought himself of going to the king and of laying his case before him. অবশেষে তিনি ভাবলেন রাজা কাছে গিয়ে তার ঘটনা পেশ করবেন।
The king saw the ghost-Brahman as well as the Brahman, and the one was the picture of the other; so he was in a fix, and did not know how to decide the quarrel. রাজা ভূত-ব্রাহ্মণকে এবং ব্রাহ্মণকে দেখলেন, এবং একজন আরেকজনের হুবহু প্রতিচ্ছবি ছিল; তাই তিনি সমস্যায় পড়লেন এবং বিবাদ নির্ধারণ করতে পারলেন না।
Day after day the Brahman went to the king and besought him to give him back his house, his wife, and his mother; and the king, not knowing what to say every time, put him off to the following day. প্রতিদিন ব্রাহ্মণ রাজার কাছে গিয়ে অনুরোধ করতেন যেন রাজা তার বাড়ি, তার স্ত্রী, এবং তার মাকে ফিরিয়ে দেন; এবং রাজা প্রতিবার কোনো উত্তর না জানিয়ে তাকে পরের দিনের জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে বলতেন।
Every day the king tells him to—”Come to-morrow”; and every day the Brahman goes away from the palace weeping and striking his forehead with the palm of his hand, and saying—”What a wicked world this is! I am driven from my own house, and another fellow has taken possession of my house and of my wife! And what a king this is! He does not do justice.” প্রতিদিন রাজা তাকে বলেন— “আগামীকাল এসো”; এবং প্রতিদিন ব্রাহ্মণ প্রাসাদ থেকে কাঁদতে কাঁদতে এবং তার কপালে হাত ঠুকে বেরিয়ে যান, বলছেন— “কী পাপময় এই পৃথিবী! আমাকে আমার নিজস্ব বাড়ি থেকে তাড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে, এবং অন্য কেউ আমার বাড়ি ও আমার স্ত্রীর দখল নিয়েছে! আর কী ধরনের রাজা এটা! তিনি ন্যায়বিচার করেন না।”
Now, it came to pass that as the Brahman went away every day from the court outside the town, he passed a spot at which a great many cowboys used to play. এখন ঘটনা হলো, ব্রাহ্মণ প্রতিদিন শহরের বাইরে আদালত থেকে বেরিয়ে যাওয়ার সময় একটি স্থানের পাশ দিয়ে যেতেন, যেখানে অনেক রাখাল খেলত।
They let the cows graze on the meadow, while they themselves met together under a large tree to play. তারা গরুদের তৃণভূমিতে চরতে দিত এবং নিজেরা বড় গাছের নিচে একত্র হয়ে খেলত।
And they played at royalty. One cowboy was elected king; another, prime minister or vizier; another, kotwal, or prefect of the police; and others, constables. এবং তারা রাজা হওয়ার খেলা খেলত। একজন রাখালকে রাজা হিসেবে নির্বাচিত করা হতো; আরেকজন প্রধান মন্ত্রী বা মন্ত্রী; অন্যজন কোতয়াল বা পুলিশ প্রধান; এবং অন্যরা ছিল কনস্টেবল।
Every day for several days together they saw the Brahman passing by weeping. কয়েকদিন ধরে তারা প্রতিদিন ব্রাহ্মণকে কাঁদতে কাঁদতে যেতে দেখত।
One day the cowboy king asked his vizier whether he knew why the Brahman wept every day. একদিন রাখাল রাজা তার মন্ত্রীকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, সে কি জানে কেন ব্রাহ্মণ প্রতিদিন কাঁদে।
On the vizier not being able to answer the question, the cowboy king ordered one of his constables to bring the Brahman to him. মন্ত্রী প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে না পারায়, রাখাল রাজা তার একজন কনস্টেবলকে আদেশ দিল ব্রাহ্মণকে তার কাছে নিয়ে আসতে।
One of them went and said to the Brahman—”The king requires your immediate attendance.” তাদের একজন ব্রাহ্মণের কাছে গিয়ে বলল—”রাজা অবিলম্বে আপনার উপস্থিতি চান।”
The Brahman replied—”What for? I have just come from the king, and he put me off till to-morrow. Why does he want me again?” ব্রাহ্মণ উত্তর দিল—”কেন? আমি তো এখনই রাজার কাছ থেকে এসেছি, আর তিনি আমাকে আগামীকাল আসতে বললেন। কেন তিনি আমাকে আবার চান?”
“It is our king that wants you—our neat-herd king,” rejoined the constable. “আমাদের রাজা আপনাকে চান—আমাদের রাখাল রাজা,” কনস্টেবল উত্তর দিল।
“Who is neat-herd king?” asked the Brahman. “রাখাল রাজা কে?” ব্রাহ্মণ জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Come and see,” was the reply. “চলুন দেখে নিন,” ছিল উত্তর।
The neat-herd king then asked the Brahman why he every day went away weeping. তারপর রাখাল রাজা ব্রাহ্মণকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন কেন তিনি প্রতিদিন কাঁদতে কাঁদতে চলে যান।
The Brahman then told him his sad story. ব্রাহ্মণ তখন তাকে তার দুঃখের কাহিনী বললেন।
The neat-herd king, after hearing the whole, said, “I understand your case; I will give you again all your rights. Only go to the king and ask his permission for me to decide your case.” রাখাল রাজা পুরো কাহিনী শোনার পর বললেন, “আমি আপনার ব্যাপার বুঝেছি; আমি আবার আপনার সমস্ত অধিকার আপনাকে দেব। শুধু রাজার কাছে গিয়ে আমার দ্বারা আপনার মামলা সিদ্ধান্ত করার অনুমতি চাইবেন।”
The Brahman went back to the king of the country, and begged his Majesty to send his case to the neat-herd king, who had offered to decide it. ব্রাহ্মণ দেশের রাজার কাছে ফিরে গেলেন এবং অনুরোধ করলেন যেন রাজা তার মামলা রাখাল রাজার কাছে পাঠান, যিনি এটি সিদ্ধান্ত করার প্রস্তাব দিয়েছেন।
The king, whom the case had greatly puzzled, granted the permission sought. রাজা, যিনি এই মামলায় খুব বিভ্রান্ত হয়েছিলেন, অনুমতি দিলেন।
The following morning was fixed for the trial. পরের দিন সকালে বিচার নির্ধারিত হলো।
The neat-herd king, who saw through the whole, brought with him next day a phial with a narrow neck. রাখাল রাজা, যিনি পুরো বিষয়টি বুঝেছিলেন, পরের দিন একটি সরু গলার কাঁচের বোতল নিয়ে এলেন।
The Brahman and the ghost-Brahman both appeared at the bar. ব্রাহ্মণ এবং ভূত-ব্রাহ্মণ দুজনেই আদালতে উপস্থিত হলেন।
After a great deal of examination of witnesses and of speech-making, the neat-herd king said—”Well, I have heard enough. I’ll decide the case at once.” অনেক সাক্ষ্য ও বক্তব্য শুনে, রাখাল রাজা বললেন—”ঠিক আছে, আমি যথেষ্ট শুনেছি। আমি এখনই মামলা সিদ্ধান্ত করব।”
“Here is this phial. Whichever of you will enter into it shall be declared by the court to be the rightful owner of the house the title of which is in dispute.” “এখানে এই কাঁচের বোতলটি রয়েছে। তোমাদের মধ্যে যেই এতে প্রবেশ করতে পারবে, আদালত তাকে ওই বাড়ির বৈধ মালিক হিসেবে ঘোষণা করবে যার মালিকানা নিয়ে বিতর্ক চলছে।”
“Now, let me see, which of you will enter.” “এখন দেখা যাক, তোমাদের মধ্যে কে এতে প্রবেশ করবে।”
The Brahman said—”You are a neat-herd, and your intellect is that of a neat-herd. What man can enter into such a small phial?” ব্রাহ্মণ বললেন—”তুমি একজন রাখাল, আর তোমার বুদ্ধিও একজন রাখালের মতো। একজন মানুষ এমন ছোট কাঁচের বোতলে কীভাবে প্রবেশ করবে?”
“If you cannot enter,” said the neat-herd king, “then you are not the rightful owner. What do you say, sir, to this?” turning to the ghost-Brahman and addressing him. “যদি আপনি প্রবেশ করতে না পারেন,” রাখাল রাজা বললেন, “তাহলে আপনি বৈধ মালিক নন। আপনি কী বলেন, স্যার?” তিনি ভূত-ব্রাহ্মণের দিকে ঘুরে বললেন।
“If you can enter into the phial, then the house and the wife and the mother become yours.” “যদি আপনি এই কাঁচের বোতলে প্রবেশ করতে পারেন, তাহলে বাড়ি, স্ত্রী এবং মা আপনার হয়ে যাবে।”
“Of course I will enter,” said the ghost. “অবশ্যই আমি প্রবেশ করব,” ভূত বলল।
And true to his word, to the wonder of all, he made himself into a small creature like an insect, and entered into the phial. এবং সত্যিই তার কথা মতো, সকলের বিস্ময়ের জন্য, সে নিজেকে ছোট একটি পোকামাকড়ের মতো রূপান্তর করল এবং কাঁচের বোতলে প্রবেশ করল।
The neat-herd king forthwith corked up the phial, and the ghost could not get out. রাখাল রাজা তৎক্ষণাৎ কাঁচের বোতলটি কর্ক দিয়ে বন্ধ করে দিলেন, এবং ভূত আর বের হতে পারল না।
Then, addressing the Brahman, the neat-herd king said, “Throw this phial into the bottom of the sea, and take possession of your house, wife, and mother.” তারপর ব্রাহ্মণকে উদ্দেশ্য করে রাখাল রাজা বললেন, “এই কাঁচের বোতলটি সমুদ্রের তলদেশে ফেলে দাও এবং তোমার বাড়ি, স্ত্রী এবং মায়ের দখল নাও।”
The Brahman did so, and lived happily for many years and begot sons and daughters. ব্রাহ্মণ তাই করলেন এবং বহু বছর সুখে বসবাস করলেন এবং পুত্র-কন্যার জন্ম দিলেন।
Here my story endeth, The Natiya-thorn withereth, etc. এখানে আমার গল্প শেষ হলো, নাটিয়া কাঁটা শুকিয়ে গেল, ইত্যাদি।

অনেকদিন আগে এক ব্রাক্ষ্মণ ছিল। সে কুলীন ছিল না বলে তার কোনো মতেই বিয়ে হচ্ছিল না। ধনী লোকেদের বাড়ি বাড়ি ঘুরে সে বিয়ের জন্য টাকা ভিক্ষা করে বেড়াত। বিয়ের জন্য তার অনেক টাকার দরকার ছিল। তখনকার দিনে বিয়ের জন্য যত টাকা না লাগত, কনের মা-বাবাকে দিতে হত অনেক বেশি। বাড়ি বাড়ি ঘুরে, সকলকে খোশামোদ করে অবশেষে প্রয়োজন মতো টাকা জোগাড় হল। যথা সময়ে তার বিয়ে হয়ে গেল এবং সে বউকে নিয়ে মায়ের কাছে এল। কিছুদিন পরে সে তার মাকে বলল, “মা, তোমাকে এবং বউকে ভরণ-পোষণ করার অর্থ আমার কাছে নেই। তাই আমি বিদেশে যেতে চাই যে-কোনো প্রকারে টাকাপয়সা রোজগারের জন্য। এই কাজে অনেক বছর সময় লাগতে পারে কারণ আমি বেশ কিছু টাকাপয়সা জোগাড় করে তবেই ফিরব। আমার কাছে এখন যেটুকু আছে তোমায় দিয়ে গেলাম, এটা দিয়ে যেমন করে হোক চালিয়ে নাও এবং আমার বউকে দেখো। এই কথা বলে মায়ের আশীর্বাদ নিয়ে ব্রাহ্মণ বিদায় নিল। ঠিক সেই দিনই সন্ধ্যাবেলায় ব্রাহ্মণের মতো একই চেহারার এক ভূত এসে ব্রাহ্মণের বাড়িতে উঠল। নববধূ তাকে দেখে তার স্বামী ভেবে বলল, “কী ব্যাপার, তুমি এত তাড়াতাড়ি কী করে ফিরে এলে? যাওয়ার সময় তো বলে গেছিলে অনেক বছর সময় লাগবে। তোমার মন বদলে গেল কেন?” ভূত বলল, “আজকের দিনটি সৌভাগ্য অর্জনের জন্য শুভ দিন নয়। সেজন্য বাড়ি চলে এলাম। তা ছাড়া আমি অল্প কিছু টাকাকড়িও পেয়েছি।” তার মায়েরও কোনো সন্দেহ হল না। ভূত তখন থেকে ওই বাড়িতেই থাকতে লাগল। সে বাড়ির মালিক হয়ে উঠল, যেন সে সত্যিই বৃদ্ধার ছেলে ও যুবতীর স্বামী। যেহেতু ভূতটি ঠিক আসল ব্রাক্ষ্মণটির মতোই ছিল, পাড়াপড়শিরাও কোনো পার্থক্য বুঝতে পারল না। কয়েক বছর পরে ওই ব্রাক্ষ্মণ বাড়ি ফিরে এল। বাড়িতে এসে সে তার মতো একজনকে দেখে অবাক হয়ে গেল। ভূত ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে বলল “তুমি কে? কী প্রয়োজনে তুমি আমার বাড়িতে এসেছ?” “আমি কে?” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ পালটা বলল, “আমি কি প্রশ্ন করতে পারি তুমি কে? এটা আমার বাড়ি, ইনি আমার মা, আর ওইটি আমার বউ।” ভূত বলল—“কী অদ্ভুত কথা বলছ। প্রত্যেকেই জানে এটা আমার বাড়ি। ওইটি আমার নিজের বৌ এবং এইটি মা। আমি অনেক বছর ধরে এখানে বসবাস করছি। হঠাৎ এসে দাবি করলেই তো হবে না যে এটা তোমার বাড়ি, আর ওই মহিলাটি তোমার বউ। তোমার নিশ্চয়ই মাথার গণ্ডগোল আছে ব্রাক্ষ্মণ।” এই কথা বলে ভূত ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে বাড়ি ছাড়া করল। এইসব দেখে ব্রায়ণ হতবাক হয়ে গেল। সে কী করবে ঠিক করতে পারল না। অবশেষে তার মনে হল রাজদরবারে গিয়ে রাজাকে সব ঘটনা বলে দেখা যাক। রাজা দুজনকে ডেকে দেখলেন দুজনের চেহারা ঠিক একইরকম। রাজা নিজেও অবাক হয়ে গেলেন ও কীভাবে এর বিচার করবেন মনস্থির করতে পারলেন না। প্রতিদিন ব্রাক্ষ্মণ রাজদরবারে গিয়ে রাজার কাছে আবেদন জানাত—আমাকে, বৌ, মা এবং বাড়ি ফিরিয়ে দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করুন। আর প্রতিদিনই রাজা মনস্থির না করতে পেরে ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে বলতেন “আগামীকাল এসো।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ রোজই চোখের জল ফেলত আর মনে মনে বলত, “কী নীতিহীন এই ধরনি! আমার বাড়ি থেকে আমাকেই তাড়িয়ে দিয়ে অন্য একজন আমার বাড়ি আর আমার বউকে কেড়ে নিয়েছে। আর এই রাজাও কেমন! উনি কোনো বিচার করতে পারলেন না।”

Why does he want me again?” “It is our king that wants you-our neat-herd king,” rejoined the constable. “Who is neat-herd king?” asked the Brahman. “Come and see,” was the reply. The neat-herdking then asked the Brahman why he every day went away weeping. The Brahman then told him his sad story. The neat-herd king, after hearing the whole, said, “I understand your case; I will give you again all your rights. Only go to the king and ask his permission for me to decide your case.” The Brahman went back to the king of the country, and begged his Majesty to send his case to the neat-herd king, who had offered to decide it. The king, whom the case had greatly puzzled, granted the permission sought. The following morning was fixed for the trial. The neat-herd king, who saw through the whole, brought with him next day a phial with a narrow neck. The Brahman and the ghost-Brahman both appeared at the bar. After a great deal of examination of witnesses and of speech-making, the neat-herd king said- “Well, I have heard enough. I’ll decide the case at once. Here is this phial. Whichever of you will enter into it shall be declared by the court to be the rightful owner of the house the title of which is in dispute. Now, let me see, which of you will enter.” The Brahman said— “You are a neat-herd, and your intellect is that of a neat-herd. What man can enter into such a small phial?” “If you cannot enter,” said the neat-herd king, “then you are not the rightful owner. What do you say, sir, to this?” turning to the ghostBrahman and addressing him. “If you can enter into the phial, then the house and the wife and the mother become yours.” “Of course I will enter,” said the ghost. And true to his word, to the wonder of all, he made himself into a small creature like an insect, and entered into the phial. The neat-herd king forthwith corked up the phial, and the ghost could not get out. Then, addressing the Brahman, the neat-herd king said, “Throw this phial into the bottom of the sea, and take possession of your house, wife, and mother.” The Brahman did so, and lived happily for many years and begot sons and daughters.

ব্রাক্ষ্মণ প্রতিদিন যেই পথ ধরে রাজসভা থেকে ফিরত, সেই পথে একটি জায়গা ছিল যেখানে অনেক রাখাল ছেলে খেলা করত। মাঠে গরুগুলোকে ছেড়ে দিয়ে, তারা একটা বিরাট গাছের নীচে জড়ো হত খেলা করার জন্য। ছেলেরা রাজা-রাজা খেলত। একজন রাজা হত, অন্যজন উজির, আর-একজন কোতোয়াল আর বাকিরা পেয়াদা হত। অনেকদিন ধরেই তারা ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে ওই পথ ধরে কান্নাকাটি করতে করতে হেঁটে যেতে দেখত। রাখাল-রাজা একদিন উজিরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল “ব্রাক্ষ্মণ প্রতিদিন কাঁদে কেন?” উজির কোনো উত্তর দিতে না পারায় রাখাল-রাজা পেয়াদাকে আদেশ দিল ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে ডেকে আনার জন্য। একজন পেয়াদা ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে গিয়ে বলল, “আমাদের রাজা আপনাকে ডাকছেন।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ বলল, “কীসের জন্য? আমি এখন রাজার ওখান থেকেই ফিরছি। উনি আমায় আবার আগামীকাল আসতে বলেছেন। উনি আবার আমাকে ডেকে পাঠিয়েছেন কেন?” “আমাদের রাজা আপনাকে ডেকেছেন—আমাদের রাখাল-রাজা,” পেয়াদা বলে উঠল। “রাখাল-রাজা কে?” উত্তরে পেয়াদা বলল, “আসুন, দেখতে পাবেন।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ রাখাল রাজার নিকট যেতেই, রাজা জিজ্ঞাসা করল উনি প্রতিদিন কাঁদতে কাঁদতে যান কেন। তখন ব্রাক্ষ্মণ তার সমস্ত দুঃখের কথা খুলে বলল। শুনে রাখাল-রাজা বলল, “আমি সব ঘটনা বুঝতে পেরেছি। আমি আপনাকে আপনার সব অধিকার ফিরিয়ে দেব। শুধু একটা কাজ করতে হবে আপনাকে। আপনি রাজাকে গিয়ে বলুন তিনি যেন আমাকে আপনার মামলার ফয়সালা করার অনুমতি দেন।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ দেশের রাজার কাছে গিয়ে তাঁকে অনুরোধ করে বলল, রাখাল-রাজা তার মামলার মীমাংসা করে দিতে চাইছে, তিনি যেন তাকে অনুমতি দেন। রাজা এই মামলার নিষ্পত্তি করতে পারছিলেন না; তাই তিনি খুশি হয়েই অনুমতি দিয়ে দিলেন। বিচারের দিন সাব্যস্ত হল পরদিন সকালে। রাখাল-রাজা সব ঘটনাই বুঝতে পেরেছিল। পরের দিন সকালবেলায় একটা সরু মুখের বোতল নিয়ে সে বিচারসভায় উপস্থিত হল। ব্রাক্ষ্মণ এবং ভূত-ব্রাক্ষ্মণ দুজনকে হাজির করা হল। তারপর সাক্ষীদের কথা শোনা হল। বাক্বিতণ্ডা হল। অবশেষে রাখাল-রাজা বলল, “অনেক শোনা হল। এবার আমি বিচার করব। এইটি একটি বোতল। যে এই বোতলের মধ্যে ঢুকতে পারবে, সে আমার বিচারে সবকিছুর প্রকৃত মালিক হবে। দেখি দুজনের মধ্যে কে ঢুকতে পারে।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ শুনে বলল—“তুমি রাখাল; তাই তোমার বুদ্ধিও রাখালের মতোই। এই বোতলের মধ্যে কোনো মানুষ কি ঢুকতে পারে?” রাখাল-রাজা বলল, “যদি না পারেন তবে আপনি প্রকৃত মালিক নন। আপনি কী বলেন মশাই?” এ কথা বলে সে ভূত-ব্রাক্ষ্মণের দিকে তাকাল। “যদি আপনি এই বোতলটির মধ্যে ঢুকতে পারেন, বাড়ি, বউ ও মা আপনার হবে।” ভূত-ব্রাক্ষ্মণ বলল, “অবশ্যই আমি ঢুকতে পারি”। এ কথা বলে সে একটা পতঙ্গের আকার ধারণ করে বোতলের মধ্যে ঢুকে পড়ল। রাখাল-রাজা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বোতলের ছিপি আটকে দেয়। তাই ভূত আর বেরোতে পারল না। তারপরে রাখাল-রাজা ব্রাক্ষ্মণকে বলল, “এই বোতলটিকে সমুদ্রের গভীরে ফেলে দিয়ে বাড়ি, মা ও স্ত্রীর দখল নিন।” ব্রাক্ষ্মণ সেরকমই করল এবং তারপর অনেক সন্তানসন্ততির জন্ম দিয়ে বহুদিন সুখে কাটিয়েছিল।
